Big Board
A nickname for the New York Stock Exchange.

Notes:
Founded in 1792, the NYSE is the oldest exchange in the United States, and more than 2,000 common and preferred stocks are traded on it. Back in 1792 the trading floor was under a buttonwood tree. Nowadays, this area is known as Wall Street.

 briefly topped 12,000 on Oct. 18 before settling back a few points to 11,992.70, up 1.2 percent for the week and still a record-high close
High Close
A tactic used by stock manipulators. They make small trades at high prices during the final minutes of trading to give the impression that the stock did very good.

Notes:
Since the closing prices are the most widely quoted, stock manipulators hope to create buzz on the stock and attract investors to the stock.

. The S&P 500 also advanced 1.2 percent to 1,365.95, while the Nasdaq rose 1.3 percent to 2,337.15. The LABJ 200 index outpaced them all with a 1.5 percent gain, closing at 137.17 for the week. Among local stocks, 132 registered advances for the week while 59 retreated. There were 21 new highs, including Teledyne Technologies Inc., Guess Inc., Pacific Energy Partners LP, Ares Capital Corp., SCPIE Holdings Inc. and DirecTV Group Inc. On Oct. 12, Liberty Media Corp. said it may swap its stake in News Corp. for a controlling interest in DirecTV. Only five stocks hit new lows, including North American Scientific Inc. and Compumed Inc. Among major gainers was Chatsworth-based digital motion control systems maker Magnetek Inc., which rose 14 percent on news of a deal to sell its Power Electronics Group to Camarillo-based Power-One Inc. Salem Communications Corp. and Peerless Systems Corp. also registered big percentage gains. On the down side, shares of Torrance-based Hi Shear Technology Corp. fell 31 percent after the company released earnings showing a drop in revenues.
