NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 5, 1998--

New Canon imageRUNNER 600 Breaks Performance Barriers By Delivering

Best-Of-Breed Technology In Image Quality, Duty Cycle And Document

Finishing Capabilities Ever Made Available In Category

Canon U.S.A., Inc., the market leader and pioneer of networked multifunction devices, has redefined the high-volume digital market today with the announcement of the imageRUNNER 600 Digital Production System, a 60 page per minute unit which offers the highest output resolution, duty cycle, and finishing capability of any competitive product available.

Built on the most robust engine platform ever offered by Canon, the imageRUNNER 600 is specifically targeted for the needs of corporate copying and distributed printing, Central Reprographic Departments (CRD CRD

With a recommended duty cycle of 250,000 impressions per month and super high-end finishing capabilities previously unavailable to digital multifunction products, the imageRUNNER 600 sets new standards of performance in addressing customer needs. At the time of launch, the imageRUNNER 600 will be offered in standalone and networked configurations.

"The new imageRUNNER 600 enters the market as the best high-volume digital multifunction product available, and it is the first product in our just-announced imageRUNNER line of devices designed for mid- to high-volume environments. Aside from its ability to outperform all competitive models in every critical area, the imageRUNNER 600 reaffirms Canon's position as the leader in digital imaging technology and network connectivity," said Robert Bryson, executive vice president and general manager of Canon's Imaging Systems Group. "On the customer value proposition, Canon continues to focus on providing full solutions for the network now, not sometime in the future as some competitors do. Without full connectivity at time of launch, the value of the customer's investment may never be fully realized."

and Post Process Inserts, the imageRUNNER 600 combines these features with the inherent advantages of digital technology to provide the greatest flexibility and power available in producing finished document sets.

"When you consider the image manipulation capability digital affords with the combined power of high end document finishing, one that uses several available paper supplies containing different content, you have a solution that is not only productive and cost-saving, but one which is truly unique among today's competitive offerings," furthered Bryson.

Standard automatic duplexing increases the level of productivity for all double-sided print and copy jobs. The imageRUNNER 600 delivers duplexed output at rated engine speed, maximizing end user productivity. With its single pass design, imageRUNNER 600 duplexing eliminates the need for separate duplex trays, reduces potential sources of paper jams, and enhances device throughput significantly.

The imageRUNNER 600 ships standard with an internal Image Server designed to specifically meet the application demands of customers within imageRUNNER 600 target markets. Delivering Scan-Once-Print-Many and Auto Page Orientation Page orientation is the way in which a rectangular page is oriented for normal viewing. The two most common types of orientation are portrait and landscape.  as standard features, the imageRUNNER 600 Image Server greatly extends these capabilities through the delivery of automatic page impositioning for saddle stitched output, confidential user mailboxes for print and copy applications, and forms registration for storage of frequently used customer forms.

Network Empowerment to End Users

Key to the connectivity of the imageRUNNER 600 is the Network Print Controller. Built around a 200 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  RISC Processor RISC processor [Reduced Instruction Set Computer], computer arithmetic-logic unit that uses a minimal instruction set, emphasizing the instructions used most often and optimizing them for the fastest possible execution. , the imageRUNNER 600 Network Print Controller integrates print processing and network connectivity onto one board. Offering standard support for 10/100 Ethernet networks, PCL (Printer Command Language) The page description language for HP LaserJet printers. It has become a de facto standard used in many printers and typesetters. PCL Level 5, introduced with the LaserJet III in 1990, also supports Compugraphic's Intellifont scalable fonts. 6 and Adobe PostScript Level III, the imageRUNNER 600 Network Print Controller delivers the most robust print processing and network connectivity support in its class.

In addition, the imageRUNNER 600 Network Print Controller can be equipped with optional Token Ring A local area network (LAN) access method developed by IBM. Conforming to the IEEE 802.5 standard, Token Ring uses a token ring access method and connects up to 255 nodes in a star topology at 4, 16 or 100 Mbps.  connectivity, and ships with a suite of software designed to provide users with extensive capabilities in the areas of network job submission, on-line finishing, forms management, and system control. In maximizing document throughput and conservation of network resources, the imageRUNNER 600 Network Print Controller also utilizes technologies which allow rasterization of incoming print jobs while a current job is printing, and continuous engine print cycle time for uninterrupted operation.

NetSpot(tm) Network Device Management Software for Enterprise-Wide Control

Standard on every networked configured imageRUNNER 600 is NetSpot(tm) software, which provides a level of device management unmatched by any other application today.
