Market Basket coming to Athol; RMD plans shopping center.

ATHOL - In what may be the best economic news in town in more than a decade, RMD See Required minimum distribution.  Inc. of Tewksbury announced yesterday that it would develop a DeMoulas Market Basket market basket
1. A grocery cart.

2. A group of products or services in a specific market, especially when considered in terms of its fluctuating cost in determining a consumer price index:
 supermarket in a 50-acre retail development.

The development is expected to include six other stores and three restaurants in an area next to Route 2 at Exit 18.

More than 50 people attended the announcement yesterday at Town Hall by Joseph Pasquale of Retail Management & Development Inc., which works with DeMoulas Market Basket Inc. to develop their stores.

RMD's website says it specializes in supermarket-anchored shopping centers.

Mr. Pasquale assured those attending that if the company starts a project, it will be completed. He said the supermarket should be built by fall 2013, taking a year from the start of permitting until completion.

No dollar figures were discussed.

The new plaza will be on the east side of the town on property bordered by Routes 2, 2A and 32. Entry to the property will be from Route 2A.

Three traffic lights will be installed to serve the development.

Market Basket would be the first supermarket to be built in Athol in more than 15 years, and when completed, it will be the only supermarket in town.

Victory Supermarket closed in 2005. The nearest store of its kind is a Hannaford supermarket in Orange, near the town line.

The next two nearest are in Gardner, Hannaford and Stop & Shop stores. A Price Chopper is near completion in Gardner.

State Sen. Stephen M. Brewer, D-Barre, said the new supermarket is well situated to serve shoppers from throughout the region.

DeMoulas is a private Tewksbury-based company that runs more than 60 supermarkets in Massachusetts and New Hampshire New Hampshire, one of the New England states of the NE United States. It is bordered by Massachusetts (S), Vermont, with the Connecticut R. forming the boundary (W), the Canadian province of Quebec (NW), and Maine and a short strip of the Atlantic Ocean (E). .
