 medical examiner A public official charged with investigating all sudden, suspicious, unexplained, or unnatural deaths within the area of his or her appointed jurisdiction. A medical examiner differs from a Coroner in that a medical examiner is a physician.  Laurie Montgomery is the first to see a pattern. Her fears are dismissed, however, even by her fellow medical examiner and lover Jack Stapleton. As the deaths mount, the pattern coalesces into something so sinister that it shouldn't be possible. When Laurie becomes a patient in the hospital with the most recent death cluster, she fears she could be the next victim. Cook inexorably in·ex·o·ra·ble

 reveals the uncertainties that underline advances in genome identification. Though not as overtly suspenseful as some of his other novels, it is nonetheless timely and thought provoking.

Guidall lends his considerable talents to this production. His expert pacing keeps the reader entertained even though the story is slow to unfold. The medical jargon rolls off his tongue as easily as Jack's dry humor and Laurie's inchoate Imperfect; partial; unfinished; begun, but not completed; as in a contract not executed by all the parties.
