Mark Zorko.Mark Zorko believes he's had some great mentors early in his career, and would like to think he's done a pretty good job of embracing what they taught him, and has built these teachings into his own leadership practices. He places a high priority on balancing his professional goals with family, nonprofit and athletic interests. Title: CFO See Chief Financial Officer. Time Management: Get up early--it's the best time of day to think and plan. I limit times I access voice/email; it's distracting. Stress Management: Exercise seems to be a good tonic. Books Recently Read: Authentic Leadership, by Bill George. He's one of the finest leaders I have ever met. Bill was also helpful early in my career with landing an expatriate assignment in Europe at Honeywell. Living at the Summit, by Dr. Tom Hill, provides a roadmap for establishing a well-rounded set of goals in life; and Halftime, by Bob Buford, articulates how to transition from success to significance in life. If I could, I'd spend 1 hour with: My paternal grandparents. They came from the old country--Slovenia--during the time around WWI. Having walked the halls of Ellis Island, I can only imagine what it was like to leave family/friends that they would likely never see again to come to America. I'd like to learn what it must have been like. It must have taken real guts for them and the millions of others to move. We're so lucky to have been born in the U.S.; it's easy to take it for granted. Who is your hero? My parents. They raised six kids who all turned out well. They taught us how to live, and in my mom's later years, taught us how to die. What's the best advice you've ever received? Four points: 1) Marry higher than yourself; 2) above all else, instill self-esteem in your children; 3) when in doubt, "do the right thing;" and 4) meaningful personal growth is elusive if you don't get out of your comfort zone. Favorite Job/s: Among my "favorite jobs," the most enriching were: working in Europe as a Finance Manager with Honeywell, leading 240 people in finance, IT and operations at Zenith Data Systems and working with a first class management team at Molex. Worst Job: Without a doubt--and I'll call it a job--was going through Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island, S.C. All other job challenges pale by comparison! However, ironically, some of the most difficult job challenges have yielded the best lessons. Most Interesting job: Fraud was discovered at a company, and I was brought in to fix the business. It was a real education in human behavior and what pushed people to play outside the lines Outside the Lines, or also referred to as OTL, is an Emmy Award winning television program on ESPN that looks "outside the lines" and examines critical issues in American sports on and off of the field of play. . Quotables: "The hard stuff is easy, and the soft stuff is hard. Focus on people, the soft side," said John Donovan (a former professor). And, "You are the average of the 10 people you spend the most time with," Dr. Tom Hill. Email: mazorko@attglobal.net --Edited by Ellen M. Heffes |
