Mark Twain went to Hawaii in 1866 and wrote a series of letters published in the Sacramento Union newspaper that provided the first observations of Hawaii for most Americans. As in his later books, Twain reveals himself to be a man of his time and his insights about Hawaii often say as much about him as about Hawaii. His clever wit, his personal charm and his astute as·tute
