The courage of Lewis & Clark and the vision of Jefferson made for a fascinating read. If I could, I'd spend one hour with: My great-grandparents, who emigrated from Europe. I'd like to know what motivated them to come to the U.S., what they experienced and what they were expecting to find. Who is your hero? My daughter Lindsay, who has special needs. She will always try her best in spite of her difficulties. She is always positive and in a good mood. When doing something together, she'll often say: "Team--right, Dad?" and then she'll high-five me. What's the best advice you've received? Early in my career, a former manager used to tell me, "Work hard, play hard," and I have taken that to heart. Favorite Job: Starting new companies or divisions from scratch and helping them grow. Worst Job: Starting new companies or divisions from scratch and closing them down. Favorite Deal: By far, it was buying the company outright in 1996 with my two partners. Buying the original owners out was challenging. I was in my late 30s, and it really taught me a lot. Sure, we would do a few things differently today, but isn't that why it's called "experience?" What inspires you? The concept that the only place success comes before work is in the dictionary. Memorable Moments: Recently being named "2007 CFO of the Year for Private Companies" in the $25 million to $100 million category by Crain's Detroit Business was truly an honor. However, spending time with my wife and family and watching our children grow up is the best reward of all. Email: mrusch@pmecompanies.com --Edited by Ellen M. Heffes |
