Marist one win away.

Byline: Paula Lincoln The Register-Guard

The Marist girls basketball team extended its Sky-Em League consecutive win streak to 99 games Thursday night and moved a game closer to a 21st league title and a 26th straight Class 3A state tournament appearance in the process.

Though the No. 2 Spartans never did seem to get their offense running in sync and shot just 37 percent from the field, the defense pulled through for a 42-29 home victory over No. 9 Pleasant Hill to give the Spartans (16-3, 9-0 Sky-Em) a two-game lead on both Pleasant Hill and Junction City Junction City, city (1990 pop. 20,604), seat of Geary co., NE Kans., at the confluence of the Republican and Smoky Hill rivers; inc. 1859. The rail, trade, and processing center of an agricultural and dairy area, it grew as the supply point for nearby Fort Riley,  with five games left to play in the regular season.

"Thank God it's almost over," said Marist coach Terry Lande, whose team will play host to Siuslaw on Tuesday in an effort to reach 100 consecutive league victories.

"It's been a tough week for us," added Lande, noting the season-ending injury to Alex Murphy Alex Murphy may refer to:
  • Alex J. Murphy, the human name of Robocop
  • Alex Murphy, English rugby league footballer
  • Alex Morris Murphy, an Australian entrepreneur, who owns a chain of backpackers hostels and is expanding into the successful chain of bubble tea stores
and the potential season-ending injury to Alyson Lande, as well as the pressure to both reach 100 victories and win the league title. "And it's been finals week."

Marist struggled a bit with the adjustments to its positions and rotation, as well as Pleasant Hill's 2-3 zone defense, but still managed to take a 28-17 halftime advantage after leading 17-11 after one quarter.
