Marines and their families get heart healthy with NRPA's help. (Armed Forces Recreation Society/Hearts N' Parks).Marine bases around the U.S. have teamed with NRPA NRPA National Recreation and Park Association NRPA Natural Resources Protective Association (Staten Island, NY) NRPA Niagara Regional Police Association (Canada) NRPA National Rifle and Pistol Association and the National Institutes of Health to provide our acclaimed Hearts N' Parks program on their bases. New magnet sites will be at Camp Lejeune Camp LeJeune (ləzh n`), U.S. marine corps base, 82,969 acres (33,576 hectares), SE N.C., SE of Jacksonville; est. 1941. , N.C., Camp Pendleton, Calif., Kaneohe Bay Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, on the east coast of Oahu, protected by coral reefs and dotted with islands. The shores of the bay are rimmed with ancient fishponds built by the Hawaiian chiefs. A U.S. marine corps air facility and the headquarters of all U.S. , Hawaii, Buford, S.C., and Cherry Point, N.C. Hearts N' Parks combines science-based information that can reduce the risk of heart disease with skills for incorporating heart-healthy behaviors into one's life as part of the regular activities offered by local park and recreation departments and other community-based agencies. In addition, the program provides useful tools for measuring the impact of these activities. "Physical inactivity physical inactivity A sedentary state. Cf Physical activity. and poor nutrition are second only to smoking as leading causes of death," says David Satcher, M.D., former U.S. surgeon general The U.S. Surgeon General is charged with the protection and advancement of health in the United States. Since the 1960s the surgeon general has become a highly visible federal public health official, speaking out against known health risks such as tobacco use, and promoting disease . "We spend a lot of money in this country treating diseases such as heart disease and cancer. What we want to do is spend more time encouraging people to stay healthy so that we can prevent disease. It's important for everyone to have a schedule of physical activity and a diet high in vegetables, fruits and grains." The primary goal of Hearts N' Parks is to reduce the growing number of overweight and obese people in the U.S. The Marine bases join magnet programs in Baltimore, Md., Phoenix, Ariz., Albuquerque, N.M., Las Vegas, Nev., Athens, Ga., Largo, Fla., Homewood, Ill., Okemos, Mich., Bowling Green, Ohio Bowling Green is the county seat of Wood CountyGR6 in the U.S. state of Ohio. At the time of the 2000 census, the population of Bowling Green was 29,636. It is part of the Toledo, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. , and Springfield, Mo.
