State of the Marine Corps to Be Focus of July 20 Luncheon Remarks

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Marine Corps Commandant General James T. Conway For other persons named James Conway, see James Conway (disambiguation).

James Terry Conway (born December 26, 1947) is a General in the United States Marine Corps. On November 13, 2006, General Conway became the 34th Commandant of the Marine Corps.
 will address the State of the Marine Corps at the July 20 noon luncheon at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. His topics will include the Corps' mission and military readiness, the status of modernization initiatives, the need to return the Corps to its expeditionary roots, and growing the Corps to a 202,000 force.

As Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, General James T. Conway is the highest ranking officer of the Marine Corps and a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He is responsible for ensuring the organization and readiness of his respective service branch and for advising the President. However, as with the other joint chiefs, the commandant has no operational command authority.

General Conway attended Southeast Missouri State University Missouri State University is a state university located in Springfield, Missouri. It is the state's second largest university in student enrollment, second only to the University of Missouri. From 1972 to 2005, Missouri State was known as Southwest Missouri State University. . He was commissioned in 1970 as an infantry officer and served initially with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, Camp Pendleton, as a rifle platoon commander and as the Battalion's 106mm recoilless-rifle platoon commander.

He has held several domestic and overseas posts and also served as Senior Aide to the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. Most recently he was commander of the I Marine Expeditionary Force The 1st Marine Expeditionary Force is a Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) of the United States Marine Corps primarily composed of the 1st Marine Division, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and 1st Marine Logistics Group.  and commanded two combat tours in Iraq.
