March 16th Wreath Laying Ceremony in Times Square Honors the Fighting 69th, the 2006 NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade Honoree, and its 155 Years of Service to New York and the United States.

The Constitution of the United States specifically charges the National Guard with dual federal and state missions. , "The Fighting 69th", in a wreath laying ceremony in Times Square, at Father Duffy Statue, Thursday, March 16th at 12 noon. The Fighting 69th recently returned home from Iraq, where they served in some of the most dangerous regions in and around Baghdad. While in Iraq, 19 soldiers from the unit were killed and more than 50 wounded. New York City's 2006 St. Patrick's St. Patrick's or Saint Patrick's may refer to:

The ceremony, which is open to the public, will take place at Father Duffy Square Duffy Square is the northern triangle of Times Square in New York City. It is located between 45th and 47th Streets, Broadway and Seventh Avenue. In addition, soldiers from the Fighting 69th who will receive medals for their service in Iraq will assist with the wreath laying.  from Ireland's 28th Infantry Battalion will accompany Lieutenant Rathburn. During the ceremony, a video tribute to the unit on a 40 by 40 foot LED sign, 300 feet above Times Square, will run and continue through St. Patrick's Day.

A statue of Father Francis P. Duffy, the seemingly fearless chaplain of the 69th, who offered support and inspiration to soldiers of all faiths during World War I, anchors Father Duffy Square. The Fighting 69th, has led New York's City St. Patrick's Day Parade since their inception 155 years ago. This year they will have the unit's largest contingent in a generation. Tens of thousands of New Yorkers have served in the 69th. Originally the Second Regiment of Irish Volunteers, the Fighting 69th was accepted as part of the New York State Militia and designated as the 69th Regiment on October 12, 1851. The unit carries forth the lineage and honors of the Civil War's famed Irish Brigade.
