About eight large maquiladoras maquiladoras (mäkē'lädō`räs), Mexican assembly plants that manufacture finished goods for export to the United States. The maquiladoras are generally owned by non-Mexican corporations.  based in Apodaca, Nuevo Leon have either closed down or are planning to do so later this year. Meanwhile, a recent survey by Jetro Mexico, reported that no less than 23 Japanese maquiladoras are planning to either reduce their production in Mexico or move out all together in the near future.

According to government statistics agency INEGI INEGI Instituto Nacional de Estadística Geografíca e Informática (Mexico) , maquiladoras provided 17% fewer jobs in March this year, compared to the same month in 2001.

Over the last year, the 10 states that have suffered the greatest amount of maquiladora closures are: Baja California (237); Sonora (85);Aguascalientes (37); Durango (34); Puebla (29); Chihuahua (28); Guanajuato (24); Coahuila (23); Yucatan (17), and the State of Mexico The State of México (often abbreviated to "Edomex" from Estado de México in Spanish) is a state in the center of the nation of Mexico. The State's capital is the city of Toluca.  (10).
