MapCiti, Web-Based Mapping Service for Cities and Towns, First to Offer High-Resolution Printing; MapCiti Reduces Administration Costs, Increases Ease of Access.

Business/Technology Editors

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 7, 2001

Syncline, Inc., today announced the addition of high-resolution printing capabilities, as well as other enhancements, to MapCiti(TM), the company's fully automated Web-based mapping service for cities, towns, and government agencies. MapCiti(TM) is the first hosted mapping service to offer high-resolution printing capabilities on the Web, enabling users to see the detailed information typically contained in municipal maps.

The new release also lets cities and towns link directly to their MapCiti(TM) maps, as well as provides them with richer graphic tools to build maps with more impact and clarity. Additions include hundreds of colors not of the white race; - commonly meaning, esp. in the United States, of negro blood, pure or mixed.

High-Resolution Printing

MapCiti(TM)'s new high-resolution printing capabilities ("vector printing") allow people to clearly see critical local information, such as property lines, street names, and local precinct A constable's or police district. A small geographical unit of government. An election district created for convenient localization of polling places. A county or municipal subdivision for casting and counting votes in elections.

This is the origin of the term "raster graphics," which is the major category that all bitmapped images and video frames fall into (GIF, JPEG, MPEG, etc.).  output"), which is insufficient to portray the details found in dense urban areas.

MapCiti(TM) provides subscribers with the continual improvements and upgrades they demand - such as the enhanced printing and graphics tools announced today - without any additional effort from subscribers.

"Our customers asked for high-resolution printing and we responded in a matter of months," said Matthew M. Gentile, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  and President of Syncline. "Because MapCiti is a hosted service, we can respond to customer demands with new critical features much faster than the traditional software release model, which forces customers to wait as long as a year for much needed functionality."

Reducing Costs for Municipalities

MapCiti(TM) enables municipalities and government agencies to easily share Geographic Information Systems geographic information system (GIS)

Computerized system that relates and displays data collected from a geographic entity in the form of a map. The ability of GIS to overlay existing data with new information and display it in colour on a computer screen is used primarily to
(GIS) data - such as property ownership, school districts, and zoning - internally, and with the public, using a browser-based interface. As a result, the costly and time-consuming practice of repeatedly printing and manually distributing municipal maps is greatly reduced.

Instead, citizens, contractors, and municipal employees can use the Internet - either in their homes and offices, or at city hall - to view, explore, and print the professional-quality maps they want. Users can pan and zoom-in on maps, as well as click on features of interest - school districts, for example - for more detailed information, such as contact information, enrollment, or demographic data from the surrounding area.

At the same time, municipal administrators retain complete control over their data. Administrators can update or change maps anytime and make them instantly available on the Web. Administrators can also upload additional "map layers" of spatial data Data that is represented as 2D or 3D images. A geographic information system (GIS) is one of the primary applications of spatial data (land maps). See spatial analysis, spatial resolution and GIS glossary.  created in ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc., Redlands, CA, www.esri.com) The world's leading developer of geographic information systems (GIS) software, including programs that plot ZIP codes and addresses, demographic information and detailed, color-coded data.  ArcView, ESRI ArcInfo, and MapInfo Professional MapInfo Professional is a Geographic Information System software product produced by MapInfo Corporation.

MapInfo Professional has the ability to combine and display, on a single map, data from a variety of sources that are in different formats and projections.
. Other online mapping services fail to offer this degree of flexibility, charging cities and towns to change their maps, and implementing those changes on a limited, set schedule - monthly, for example.

MapCiti(TM), a managed service, gives cities and towns a ready-to-use alternative to costly, complex, and time-consuming in-house Web development projects.
