Map of the Middle East.

The Middle East is a region, not a continent. It includes parts of Africa, Asia, and Europe. Many Middle Eastern countries share geographical, political, and cultural similarities. Geographically, much of the Middle East is desert, but the region has abundant oil deposits, making many of the Middle Eastern countries major oil producers. Islam is the major religion in all countries except Cyprus and Israel. More than three fourths of the people are Arab.
