Asia is the largest continent, with a land area of more than 17 million square miles, comprising about 30 percent of Earth's total land area. Geographically, Asia is a continent of extremes: the cold Arctic expanse of Siberia; the tropical rain forests of Thailand; the fertile, productive land of the Indian subcontinent Indian subcontinent, region, S central Asia, comprising the countries of Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh and the Himalayan states of Nepal, and Bhutan. Peninsular region, southwest Asia. With its offshore islands, it covers about 1 million sq mi (2.6 million sq km). Constituent countries are Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, and, the largest, Saudi Arabia.
. Asia is home to the world's highest mountains The following is a list of the world's 100+ highest mountains per height above sea level, all of which are located in Asia. Only those summits are included that, by an objective measure, may be considered individual mountains as opposed to subsidiary peaks. , sometimes called "the roof of the world." Asia's lowest elevation is the Dead Sea (1,310 ft below sea level), a saltwater lake shared by Jordan and Israel. Asia's--and Earth's--highest peak is Mount Everest (29,035 ft), located on the border of China and Nepal. Many island countries, including Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, and Malaysia, are part of Asia. More than 3.875 billion people live in Asia; that's more than three fifths of the world's population.
