Africa is the second-largest continent, with a land area of 11.7 million square miles. The world's largest desert stretches across northern Africa for more than 3,000 miles. Desert temperatures can exceed 130[degrees]F. The world's longest river begins in eastern Africa and flows more than 4,100 miles north to the sea. The part of Africa south of the desert is called sub-Saharan Africa. It has rain forests, several major rivers, savannas (grasslands), and deserts.
