Manukau Institute of Technology student wins top nursing award and Maori health scholarship.

 (MIT MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology ) nursing student Leah Dixon has been awarded the prestigious John McLeod For other persons named John McLeod, see John McLeod (disambiguation).

John McLeod (born 1795 - died sometime after 1842) was a Scottish-born explorer of Canada, in his capacity as a fur trader with the North West Company and Hudson's Bay Company.
 Award in recognition of excellence.

The award, made by the Ministry of Health, recognises commitment to Maori health, leadership qualities and academic excellence, and is worth $4000. Dixon, of Raukawa descent and in her final year of the MIT Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing) degree, also receives a Ministry of Health Maori health scholarship worth $1500.

Dixon was one of seven MIT nursing students and graduates to receive the Ministry of Health Maori health scholarship. The other recipients were Janet Maxwell, Jo Marine, Natalie Pere père

Dixon began tertiary studies 15 years after leaving school. She said her five children, aged three to 13 years, inspired her to consider going back to school to train as a nurse. Her interest in health began as a child when she helped look after relatives who were dying of cancer. "Our health is so important--nurses get to make a difference in people's lives," she said.

Scholarships from Pegasus Health

Seven Maori students, including two nursing students, have recently been awarded the Pegasus Health Maori workforce development scholarships.

Since being established two years ago, the scholarships have supported 11 Maori students during their studies in medicine, nursing or an allied health area.
