Manitoba -- Winnipeg Archbishop James Weisgerber has received the Saskatchewan Order of Merit. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, the Archbishop spent many years working with Aboriginal people, and also chaired boards in labour-management disputes ....

The Manitoba Court of Appeal has overturned a ruling by Justice Jeffrey Oliphant requiring the province to pay for abortions performed in private clinics. (See C.I. article, Nov. 2005, p. 39.)Judge Oliphant had ruled that requiring women to pay for abortions outside publicly operated hospitals violated their rights under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Physician and facility fees for abortions in private (i.e. for-profit) clinics are completely covered in Ontario and Newfoundland, while physician fees are covered in British Columbia, Quebec and Alberta. Other provinces either have no private abortion clinics, or provide no funding for them....
