Manitoba immunization and screening mammograph helped in preventive care.


WINNIPEG -- Manitoba government programs in childhood immunization and screening mammography mammography, diagnostic procedure that uses low-dose X rays to detect abnormalities in the breasts. The early diagnosis of breast cancer made possible by the routine use of mammography for screening women increases a woman's treatment alternatives and improves her  actively helped the provision of preventive care, according to a report in the December 2003 of the American Journal of Public Health The American Journal of Public Health (AJPH) is a peer reviewed monthly journal of the American Public Health Association (APHA). The Journal also regularly publishes authoritative editorials and commentaries and serves as a forum for the analysis of health policy. .

The longitudinal study by the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy concluded that Organized programs that target population groups, recognize barriers to access, and facilitate self-evaluation are critical for equitable delivery.

The article reports that:

* cervical cancer screening rates remained static and showed strong socioeconomic differences

* childhood immunization rates remained high with small socioeconomic gradients and

* The introduction of the Manitoba Breast Screening Program resulted in rising rates of screening and vanishing socioeconomic gradients.
