Manisses Communications organizes ambitious summit on addiction.As newsletter and specialized information publishers look beyond their publications for new sources of revenue and new alliances with non-publishers, Manisses Communications Group Inc. offers a shining example. The Providence, Rhode Island-based company, which publishes newsletters on drug and alcohol addiction, recently organized the inaugural Providence Summit on Addiction to develop public awareness campaigns to educate the public and the medical community on the effectiveness of drug and alcohol treatment and the ability of those in recovery from addiction to lead productive and happy lives. Attending were leaders from no fewer than 28 organizations representing the fields of addiction treatment and prevention. The campaign agreed on at the summit will focus on the personal nature of addiction and how it affects millions of Americans and their families. The critical importance of early intervention and prevention will be emphasized and the many success stories of those in recovery will be illustrated. The Providence Summit was sponsored through an educational grant from primary sponsor Odyssey Pharmaceuticals, manufacturer of Antabuse An·ta·buse ( n t -by s, a federally approved medication to treat alcoholism. Four major addiction treatment organizations were also sponsors of the event: the Caron Foundation, CRC Health Corp., Hazelden Foundation, and Phoenix House Foundation. As organizer of the Summit, Manisses has certainly positioned itself as the leading publisher of addiction periodicals and other resources. Speaking of which, Manisses will publish a special report detailing the proceedings of the Providence Summit in upcoming issues of Addiction Professional and Behavioral Healthcare Tomorrow, both published by Manisses. Early in its existence, in the 1980s, Manisses demonstrated its knack for forming key alliances by hooking up with its neighbor the Brown University Brown University, Providence, R.I.; coeducational chartered 1764 as Rhode Island College at Warren, opened 1765. It moved to Providence in 1770 and was renamed for Nicholas Brown in 1804. Pembroke College, established in 1891 as an affiliated college for women, merged with Brown in 1971.
