Mandela hailed as epoch-making leader.

ISLAMABAD, July 18, 2009 (Balochistan Times) -- Former South African President Nelson Mandela turned 91 on Saturday amidst calls here for capturing the spirit of his lifelong anti-colonialist crusade that can transform the world into a haven for peace and harmony if properly followed. The birthday of Mandela, the worldwide icon of steadfast struggle for liberty, struggle against apartheid and selfless service to humanity, was celebrated throughout the world. South African Acting High Commissioner to Islamabad, Cassem Peer, also arranged a similar cake-cutting ceremony to honour the founder-President of an apartheid-free South Africa. Speaking on the occasion, Cassem Peer recalled that Octogenarian Mandela spent 67 years of his life in service to humanitywhether by leading them against apartheid regime of white minority, whether by his humble community work or with his efforts to ameliorate the life of slum-dwellers of his country. If everyone of us allocates even 67-minutes-a-month to the service of humanity, it will be a notable contribution in ameliorating the lot of the downtrodden, Cassem Peer said. He eulogised the epic anti-apartheid struggle of Nelson Mandela who spent 27 years of his life in the prisons of apartheid regime of South Africa but never yielded to oppression and injustice. Peer also admired the role of Winnie Mandela in the historic role played by Nelson Mandela in the freedom of his people. Mazharul Haq, DG Africa of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was the chief guest at the birthday ceremony of Nelson Mandela, paying rich compliments to the man who he said had changed the course of history through the sheer weight and charm of his personality and his zeal. Mr. Khalid Mehmood, who has translated into Urdu Mandelas book Long Walk to Freedom, also spoke on the occasion, hailing the elder statesman as one of the greatest ever political and social leaders in history.
