The Council called on parties concerned to immediately implement resolution 338 (1973). The Secretary-General was asked to submit, at the end of the new mandate period, a report on the developments with regard to the situation and on measures taken to implement that resolution. [By resolution 338 (1973), the Council had called for a cease-fire in the 1973 hostilities and called on the parties to begin implementing resolution 242 (1967), which sets forth principles for a peaceful settlement in the Middle East. The Council decided further that negotiations should start between the parties concerned under appropriate auspices aus·pi·ces 1 n. Both the Syrian Arab Republic and Israel had agreed to the proposal, he stated. Determined efforts should be made by all concerned to "tackle the problem in all its aspects, with a view to arriving at a just and durable peace settlement", as called for in Council resolution 338, he said. Following adoption of the resolution, Council President Richard Woolcott (Australia) read a statement on behalf of Council members, stating that the Council shared the views expressed by the Secretary-General to the effect that despite the "present quiet in the Israel-Syria sector, the situation in the Middle East as a whole continues to be potentially dangerous and is likely to remain so, unless and until a comprehensive settlement covering all aspects of the Middle East problem can be reached". Restrictions on freedom of movement still existed, the Secretary-General reported, adding he would continue to exert all possible efforts to correct that situation.
