Observer Force (UNDOF) for a six-month period until 30 November 1987. The Council acted in unanimously adopting resolution 596 (1987). It was the twenty-sixth extension since the creation of the Force in 1974. The Council called on the parties concerned to immediately implement resolution 338 (1973) by which the Council had called for a cease-fire in the 1973 hostilities and asked for implementation of resolution 242 (1967), which sets out principles for a peaceful settlement in the Middle East. The Secretary-General was asked to report at the end of the new mandate period on developments with regard to the situation and on measures taken to implement resolution 596. Following adoption of the resolution, Council President Li Luye (China), on behalf of Council members, said the Council shared the views expressed by the Secretary-General in his report on UNDOF activities from 13 November 1986 to 17 May 1987 (S/18868) that despite the "present quiet in the Israel-Syria sector, the situation in the Middle East as a whole continues to be potentially dangerous and is likely to remain so, unless and until a comprehensive settlement covering all aspects of the Middle East problem can be reached'. The Secretary-General, in reporting on UNDOF, referred to the situation in the Middle East as a whole, stating he hoped that determined efforts would be made by all concerned to "tackle the problem in all its aspects, with a view to arriving at a just and durable peace settlement', as called for in resolution 338.
