Manchester Airport Takes Off with Trapeze Networks' WLAN Mobility System; WLAN Implemented to Increase Customer Services and to Develop Airport's Commercial Opportunities.

PLEASANTON, Calif. & LONDON -- Trapeze Networks(TM), the award winning provider of the wireless LAN A local area network that transmits over the air typically in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz unlicensed frequency band. It does not require line of sight between sender and receiver. Wireless base stations (access points) are wired to an Ethernet network and transmit a radio frequency over an area  (WLAN See wireless LAN.

) Mobility System(TM), and pan-European network solutions and services provider, Telindus, have been selected by Manchester Airports Group The Manchester Airports Group (MAG) is a holding company owned by the ten boroughs of the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester, England. Following the purchase of airport group BAA (owner and operator of seven UK airports) by Spanish Grupo Ferrovial in 2006, MAG is now the  (MAG) to implement a public and private WLAN solution at Manchester Airport For City Airport Manchester, UK, see .

MAG opted for Trapeze's Mobility System(TM) as it can provide a dual-purpose wireless network over one common infrastructure. Trapeze Networks is providing wireless access for MAG's internal employees including airport staff, tenants and service partners while also providing wireless access to the public network for travellers and businesses within the airport complex. The WLAN, managed by Trapeze's RingMaster(TM) planning, configuring, deploying and managing software suite, enables MAG to increase its commercial offering and cater to the growing business needs of its users.

The Trapeze Mobility System allows the airport to support a wide range of services across a single 802.11 platform. With potentially hundreds of wireless devices operating simultaneously across the airport complex, provisioning access rights is key. RingMaster integrates with authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA AAA: see American Automobile Association.

) servers to provide services based on user identity, called Identity-Based Networking, which lets MAG centralize policies for network access and mobility services. This further enables MAG to provision the network and create separate zones and access privileges for operational staff (for example, customer services and security personnel) and the public (such as travellers and businesses within the airport).

"Traditionally, many airports have suffered from dilution of wireless services due to the presence of multiple uncontrolled wireless infrastructures that are both difficult to manage in terms of conflicting spectrums and also potentially confusing for the travelling public," said Aaron Bazler, network and infrastructure manager at MAG. "MAG is revolutionizing this approach by teaming up with partners that can offer a single, common wireless infrastructure that will allow our travelling passengers to access wireless services in all passenger areas of the terminal. In addition, our airport staff, tenants and service partners, will be able to carry out tasks without physical boundaries across the same common infrastructure."

The system enables revenue to be made from a "Workzone" instead of isolated connection spots. The public service, in association with T-Mobile, can be utilized to generate revenue anywhere in the airport; users do not need to be located in a specific part of the airport, but can access the Internet from any lounge or business within the complex. By allowing airport tenants (such as shops and airline operators) secure, authenticated wireless virtual LAN (VLAN See virtual LAN.
