IBM GLOBAL SERVICES

IBM Global Services vaulted to the top of the management consulting firms list this year after increasing the number of management consultants in its L.A. County offices by 58 percent. The consulting division of the New York-based firm employs 1,267 consultants, up from 800 last year.

Marketplace Executive Jeffery Brooks said increased business in all the firm's consulting areas accounted for the growth. Brooks said the three biggest sources of growth were middle-market clients, E-business services and Y2K-compliance consulting. "We've seen a good amount of growth in the small to mid-sized companies as well. IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  has also started to focus on these kinds of companies" Brooks said.

Gary Hehnig, principal of SoundView Technology Group, attributed IBM's local growth to an increasing number of outsourcing deals. Many companies are selling their information technology divisions and contracting with IBM to run their IT operations.

In order to keep up with the booming market, IBM will add 18,000 new employees to its worldwide global services sector. For each of the past two years in a row, IBM has added 15,000 employees worldwide. "Their services business continues to perform flawlessly" Helmig said.

Still, there may be trouble on the horizon. With much of IBM's growth focused on Y2K See Y2K problem and Y2K compliant.
