During the booking process Nov. 28, Jesse Dean Estabrook asked to see someone from the jail medical staff, but provided little information to a nurse other than that he had eaten some mushrooms, Chief Deputy District Attorney R. Paul Frasier said.

 and wouldn't let the nurse take any of his vital signs, but she didn't see any symptoms to indicate a life-threatening situation, Frasier said.

Because of his demeanor and statements, authorities put Estabrook in a cell checked by jail staff every 15 minutes. About two hours after the checks began, workers found that he wasn't breathing. Attempts to revive him failed.

Investigators learned later from a man who was arrested with Estabrook, 21-year-old Daniel LaPine of Coquille, that Estabrook had ingested methamphetamine, Frasier said.

No one is sure how much, but LaPine told officers that Estabrook had a "large" amount.

"LaPine further told police he had observed Mr. Estabrook 'eat' a bag of methamphetamine in the police car before they arrived at the jail," Frasier said.

An examination of Estabrook's stomach contents turned up what appeared to be the remains of three to four plastic bags like those commonly used to package methamphetamine, Frasier said.

The number for Estabrook was 9,700, nearly 200 times the amount usually considered lethal, Frasier said.
