Man, woman found dead in back yard.

Byline: JACK MORAN The Register-Guard

A man and woman died Saturday in an apparent murder-suicide in the River Road area.

A family member discovered the bodies in the back yard of a single-story house at 681 Bushnell Lane. The person called authorities about 3:30 p.m. and said his parents were both dead and appeared to have been shot, according to the Lane County sheriff's office.

Lane County sheriff's Sgt. Matt Keetle said neighbors reported hearing gunshots sometime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday.

Deputies rushed to the house and confirmed that the man and woman were dead and had suffered gunshot wounds. A gun was found with the bodies, Keetle said.

Keetle said both victims were in their 60s. Authorities are not seeking any suspects in connection with the deaths, he said.

"There is the potential that this is a murder-suicide," Keetle said Saturday evening, just before he and four other investigators entered the home. "We have spoken with neighbors and the family, and the basic circumstances indicate that's what this is."

Sgt. Steve Broome said that only the two victims were at home when the shootings occurred.

Neighbors said they knew little about the couple and rarely saw them.

One man who lived across the street from the house, painted yellow with a fenced yard, said the male resident's large dog often trailed behind him when he walked in his front yard.

He was "a quiet guy with a faithful dog," said the man, who declined to give his name. The neighbor said he saw the man walk to his mailbox on Saturday morning.
