"Dr. Lebovic's rich and varied background will provide great strength to the ASBD board as it moves forward to meet the needs of healthcare professionals," said the society's president, Debu Tripathy, M.D., of the University of California, San Francisco Coordinates:  .

Dr. Lebovic, a breast surgeon breast surgeon A general surgeon specialized in breast surgery  at Stanford University Stanford University, at Stanford, Calif.; coeducational; chartered 1885, opened 1891 as Leland Stanford Junior Univ. David Starr Jordan was its first president.  Hospital (Palo Alto, Calif.) and founder of the Bay Area Breast Center, developed the MammoPad breast cushion to make mammography mammography, diagnostic procedure that uses low-dose X rays to detect abnormalities in the breasts. The early diagnosis of breast cancer made possible by the routine use of mammography for screening women increases a woman's treatment alternatives and improves her  more comfortable for women. She also hoped the improved comfort would encourage greater compliance with physicians' and government recommendations that all women over age 40 receive regular mammograms.

Several clinical studies demonstrate that mammography discomfort is a primary reason for poor compliance with mammography screening guidelines. The MammoPad breast cushion, a single-use, adhesive-backed foam cushion, covers and cushions the cold, hard surfaces of the mammography device, thereby creating a softer, more comfortable mammogram mammogram /mam·mo·gram/ (mam´o-gram) a radiograph of the breast.

A clinical assessment by the eminent Swedish mammographer Professor Laszlo Tabar, M.D., along with a U.S. study, tested the cushion's effectiveness with nearly 1,300 patients. In both research settings, a majority of women reported that the cushion significantly reduced discomfort. The research also confirmed that the recyclable, FDA-cleared cushion does not affect X-ray quality.
