Mallinckrodt Medical's GEM(R) Stat Analyzer Selected for U.S. Army's DEPMED System.

ST. LOUIS, Missouri--(HealthWire)--June 5, 1995--Mallinckrodt Medical, Inc. announced that its subsidiary, Mallinckrodt Sensor Systems, Inc. of Ann Arbor, Michigan, has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Army for 178 GEM(R) Stat portable blood gas, electrolyte and hematocrit analyzers.

These instruments are for use in the Army's Deployable Medical System (DEPMEDS) and may be requisitioned by the Army, Navy or Air Force. DEPMEDS is a hospital equipment system that is capable of being located in a desired or required area of operation during a national emergency, contingency or war.

"The GEM Stat instrument, selected for the Army from a field of five competing blood gas instruments, is ideal for the DEPMEDS environment due to its small size, ease of use with minimal training requirement and test menu," said Robert G. Moussa, president and CEO of Mallinckrodt Medical. "The approximate two-minute turnaround of key analyte results is critical in the DEPMED environment."

According to Roscoe C. Young, Jr., M.D., commander of the 115 MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) unit during Operation Desert Storm, "The instrument is sufficiently compact and rugged to have functioned flawlessly in analysis of blood pH, carbon dioxide and oxygen tension, hematocrit, ionized calcium, sodium and potassium in combat." In his upcoming article in American Clinical Laboratory, entitled "Blood gas/electrolyte analysis during patient evacuation and in the prehospital environment," Dr. Young states, "They (GEM Stat instruments) have been shown to meet standards of quality control as well as cost effectiveness."

The order for 178 GEM Stat instruments follows a recent order by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for 90 GEM(R) Premier instruments for use with the VA's TraVAlab(TM) portable cart program.
