Community Campus, a program established by Sioux Falls Sioux Falls, city (1990 pop. 100,814), seat of Minnehaha co., SE S.Dak., on the Big Sioux River; settled 1856, inc. as a village 1877, as a city 1883. Settlers abandoned the site in 1862 because of Native American raids, but with the establishment (1865) of Fort  School District 49-5, is designed to help students with special needs enter adulthood at a high level of independence. The program resulted in the school district being named the South Dakota South Dakota (dəkō`tə), state in the N central United States. It is bordered by North Dakota (N), Minnesota and Iowa (E), Nebraska (S), and Wyoming and Montana (W).  state winner in the 2007 National Civic Star Award competition.

The campus is located in a leased space in a shopping mall, a setting that has proved ideal for instruction and practice in daily living and vocational and/or employment activities. Students are surrounded sur·round

 by community activity. Numerous retailers in the mall employ students in volunteer and/or paid positions. The mall is located close to adult-service providers and other work sites, and students have convenient access to city bus and other transit services.

Community Campus teachers and employment consultants work with the staffs at the three Sioux Falls public high schools to develop comprehensive transition programs for students who have finished a minimum of four years at their high schools, completed the coursework coursework

, supported or independent work in the community. The jobs may be located in the community at large or in the adult-service system. Each student spends part of his or her day working.

Community Campus students receive instruction and training in independent living skills, recreation and leisure activities and community access.

Decisions are made cooperatively with each student and his or her family. Community Campus students are supported in developing self-advocacy skills that will transfer to their post-secondary and adult environments. Students' personal dignity is enhanced as they learn to travel independently through the community and on the job.

In 2004, an expansion project at the campus was completed, and Community Campus has enrolled about 30 students, ages 18 to 21, each year. After graduation, many students are capable of going on to post-secondary programs at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, Iowa Estherville is a city in Emmet County, Iowa, United States. The population was 6,656 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Emmet CountyGR6. Estherville is home to the main campus of Iowa Lakes Community College. .
