Male/female affirmative action? 60 minutes misses mark. (Update).


During an October 20 segment of 60 Minutes focused on the sliding achievement levels of boys in secondary education versus the growing academic superiority of girls, a New England high school principal commented that IHEs have been "practicing affirmative action" for some time. He said they've been routinely trying to balance boy/girl ratios in incoming classes that otherwise would be heavily populated by females.

But according to CT-based education consultant Matthew Greene, "Yes, schools like the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, with a 60/40 ratio, must work to balance their classes. But to call this affirmative action is misleading. At the most competitive colleges, engineering-oriented colleges, and top business schools, boys still dominate. There are still levels at which men will be over-represented compared to women. To say that boys are not doing welt welt (wlt)
