Malaysian state to subsidize funerals

A Malaysian state will subsidize the funeral expenses of some residents to recognize their contributions to the state's economic growth.

"This is one way of saying thanks to the people for helping the state prosper," Selangor state's Chief Minister Mohamad Khir Toyo said Thursday, while launching the $295,000 funeral fund.

He said the government will allocate money to the fund each year to make sure the loved ones of those eligible get $588 for funeral costs.

The aid will cover funerals of people older than 60 who have lived in Selangor state for at least 15 years, and of disabled people of any age.

Mohamad Khir said the subsidy will require families to show a death certificate, proof of kinship and residence, and a copy of the applicant's national identity card.

The state legislature approved the program in November. It takes effect immediately. The state has enjoyed 6.3 percent growth, compared to a national average of 6 percent, Mohamad Khir said.
