Malaysian crash toll rises to 22

The death toll in Malaysia's worst bus crash rose to 22 after an Indonesian boy and a Vietnamese man died over the weekend, police officials said Monday.

The 3-year-old boy, whose Indonesian parents were killed in the Aug. 13 crash in central Perak state, died Friday. The Vietnamese man died late Saturday, said district police chief Raja Musa Raja Razak.

Four other passengers are still hospitalized, the New Straits Times reported.

In the early morning accident, the bus crashed through a protective barrier along Malaysia's main highway, hit some boulders and tipped over at high speed before plunging upside down into a deep ditch. Its roof was ripped off.

Initial investigations showed that the bus driver, who died, was speeding and may have fallen asleep since there were no skid marks on the road. He had two arrest warrants and 13 summons for various traffic offenses against him.

Bus crashes are relatively rare in Malaysia. The worst previous accident occurred in 1996 when a tourist bus crashed, killing 17 people and injuring 15.
