Making the cupboard double-wide.

To make room for large cooking implements, Paul Koo, of Palo Alto, California, removed a nonstructural vertical member backing the doors of one of his kitchen cabinets. Shelves within the new doublewide opening easily accommodate a fish poacher, rolling pin, wide serving platters, and other bulky items.

Mr. Koo took extra care in sawing through the vertical. After sanding and staining the cuts, he screwed the piece to the back of the left door, to preserve the look of the rest of the cabinets.
