Makin' the cut: how to go for a new style and leave the salon with a look you'll absolutely love.

THE DO'S AND DON'TS OF GETTING A NEW 'DO

So you're ready to pull an Ashlee Simpson and give your hair a new look? Fab! Before you head out, brush up secrets to getting the perfect new style for you.

SEEK OUT A GREAT STYLIST

You don't want a beauty school dropout (1) On magnetic media, a bit that has lost its strength due to a surface defect or recording malfunction. If the bit is in an audio or video file, it might be detected by the error correction circuitry and either corrected or not, but if not, it is often not noticed by the human  hacking your hair. So how do you find a lab cutter? "Ask a friend whose hair you like," says Pantene celebrity stylist Brett Freedman freed·man

. "Or, better yet, someone you might not know that well but who suddenly looks fabulous. That's a sure signal a girl is getting great guidance." If the stylist isn't available right away (she's booked--a good sign!), patiently wait it out. Choosing an inexperienced, more available stylist is usually a mistake.

Before your first appointment, get a consultation. Be upfront about what you want, but stay open-minded about your hairdresser's opinion. She might have ideas you didn't consider. After all, she styles hair for a living! Just be sure you're both on the same page about your 'do.

COME AS YOU ARE

"Come in with your hair the way you usually wear it to give the stylist an idea as to what she will be working with and what you want to change," says Jo Ann Welch Ann Courtney Welch OBE, nee Edmonds, (20 May, 1917 — 5 December, 2002) was a pilot who received the Gold Air Medal from Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) for her contributions to the development of four air sports - gliding, hang gliding, paragliding and microlight , educator for Fantastic Sams salons. This is especially important for curly hair. Your stylist needs to judge your natural texture, shrinkage and curl pattern. And, please, arrive on time.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING

Are you a shower-and-run kind of gal? Or do you take an hour prepping in the a.m.? Consider how much time you're willing to give your new 'do. "Don't get a really involved style if you can't make the commitment to getting it to look great," says Andrew Bartfield, director of education at L'Oreal Professionel.

AU NATURAL

It's good to be realistic about your hair texture. "Some styles are great, but if your hair is too thin or curly it may require too much work to maintain," says Brett. And if you have kinky kink·y

or curly hair, choose someone experienced with that texture.

ABOUT FACE

Stylist Mark Garrison has suggestions for complementing your face shape: Round faces want volume on top. Square shapes should try a side part but skip geometric lines, like a center part. Oval faces look best in long sleek styles. Long face shapes should add layers for fullness on sides. Heart shapes can go for a length that frames the jawline.

PHOTO-FINISH

Think you're onto the next best thing since The Rachel? "There's nothing wrong with having a variation of a trend," says Andrew, "or with being fashionable ... as long as you understand the maintenance." In other words Adv. 1. in other words - otherwise stated; "in other words, we are broke"

SPEAK YOUR MIND

If you see something scary happening mid-slice (snip-snip), speak up. Make conversation about your desired result. Calmly ask questions like "We're chopping it to my chin, right?" Hair stylists are not mind-readers, and they want you to be happy with the cut.

GO OUT IN STYLE

If you aren't pleased with the way the cut turns out, now's not the time to be shy. Your stylist can make adjustments before you hit the door. But keep in mind that it may take time for you to get used to the new-'do you!

Q&A

What's the deal with tipping? Who gets a tip and how much?

Be honest and upfront about what you can afford, especially if it's a stylist you love. Tipping is a personal thing but giving 15 percent to 20 percent of the total service is the norm for hairstylists. And don't forget to pass a few bucks to the shampoo girl ($2 to $5), particularly if she gave you a great scalp massage! If you really liked how she styled your hair, express your gratitude with a big thanks--compliments are priceless.

RECREATE A SALON LOOK AT HOME

* Watch your stylist in action. Did he start with a flat brush, then move to a round one to finish? Did he apply product before drying or after or both? Pay attention.

* Ask about styling tools. Your stylist is blowing out your hair with a round brush. What size is it? Where can you get one? Most salons sell the tools they use.

* Learn how to use the product. If you don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)
