Conference to chart strategies for wealth building

In January 2000, BLACK ENTERPRISE magazine launched its Black Wealth Initiative, which has at its core a Declaration of Financial Empowerment. In keeping with the magazine's goal, the Fifth Annual Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Conferences, to be held May 10-14 at Disney's Contemporary Resort in Orlando, Florida, will offer an agenda which focuses on bold moves for increasing the bottom line of African American-owned companies.

"The entire program will look at how entrepreneurs can tap into various sources of financing, manage their business assets and reach out to new markets to gain economic strength;' says Sherry Browne, Entrepreneurs Conference program manager.

In addition, participants who arrive at the event early will be treated to a bonus session on wealth building on Wednesday, May 10. "This is a perfect opportunity to reward those attendees who arrive early that day,' says Browne.

The two-hour seminar will be presented by BE editors. "We'll explore various topics related to personal finance management, including asset allocation strategies, how to invest for growth and how to customize your retirement plan;' says Derek T. Dingle, BE executive editor and one of the seminar's presenters. "We will give entrepreneurs some tips on getting their individual or family finances in order as a prelude to the conference sessions which focus on the business of managing and growing their companies' revenue base"

Organizers believe they have put together an overall program that will demonstrate the theme: "Smart Moves--Leveraging Power, Wealth & Influence" From a town hall meeting (similar in format to last year's Titans of the B.E. 100s, which featured CEOs from many of the nation's black-owned businesses) to the sessions on e-commerce, going public and stress management, invited speakers are the African American pioneers and major players in the world of business. They include Scott Royster, executive vice president and CFO of Radio One Inc. (No. 40 on the BE INDUSTRIAL/SERVICE 100 list), a company that is financing an extremely successful expansion effort after going public in mid-1999; Susan Taylor, editor-in-chief for Essence magazine, best-selling author and motivational speaker; Don Coleman, CEO of Don Coleman Advertising (No. 3 on the BE ADVERTISING AGENCIES list), who formed a partnership with the $12 billion global enterprise True North Communications to gain access to other ethnic markets.
