Major investments in new sports venues.

Before the Olympic torch arrives at the Central American Complex in Mayaguez for the 2010 Central American & Caribbean Games, 11 government agencies, 17 municipalities and more than a dozen private-sector partners are working to complete 89 projects outlined in a master plan known as Mayaguez 2010, reports Caribbean Business (Sept. 3, 2006). The infrastructure development plan will pour US$1.7 billion into the area to benefit 17 municipalities while helping create more than 10,500 new construction jobs over the next four years. The western region includes 17 municipalities with 507,131 residents (13.3% of the island's total population.)
