Major Investment at Lion Foods

Details of a major investment by Runcorn-based Lion Foods Ltd have been announced.

New cleaning technology has been introduced at a cost of 750,000 [pounds]. The plant, specially designed to clean the full range of herbs and spices, provides other benefits. At Runcorn they use a combination of the latest microbiological technology to provide the solution to the difficult problem of how to treat the many different crop types. For instance, many ethnic dishes incorporate spices that have been gently roasted prior to blending, so the new plant is fitted with heating units to gently heat the spices during the cleaning process to simulate this roasting process.

They have also built a sauce plant at a cost of about 1m [pound]. and during this current year they are planning to introduce a range of sauces, dressings and dips. They have just finished work on a new product development laboratory, which now includes development kitchens, a pilot-scale production plant and special tasting booths. As part of their continuing development programme the existing quality control laboratory is being fitted out with the latest equipment for flavour analysis and for testing both incoming raw material and outgoing products.
