Dr. Ray A. Dickie Receives FSCT George Baugh Heckel Award

The FSCT presented Ray A. Dickie, editor of JOURNAL OF COATINGS TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH and JCT COATINGSTECH, with the George Baugh Heckel Award at the Opening Session of its 82nd Annual Meeting, October 27, 2004 in Chicago, IL. Considered the most prestigious of FSCT awards, the Heckel Award recognizes the outstanding contributions that an individual has made to the organization's interest and prestige. Established in 1951, the Award is dedicated to the memory of George Baugh Heckel, who served as Temporary Chairman when the Federation was organized in 1922, and as Secretary for many years thereafter.

FSCT Accomplishments

Having served the FSCT for many years as a member of both the Publications Committee and the Editorial Review Board of the JOURNAL OF COATINGS TECHNOLOGY, Dr. Dickie was named technical editor and chair of the Editorial Review Board in 1997, and editor of JCT in 2000. When the FSCT separated this publication into two journals in 2003, Dr. Dickie was appointed editor for both. His scientific contributions to the industry were recognized by the FSCT when he was invited to present the Joseph J. Mattiello Memorial Lecture at the organization's 1994 Annual Meeting. Dr. Dickie served as chair of the Mattiello Committee in 1999. For many years a member of the Detroit Society for Coatings Technology, he is a member of the Piedmont Society for Coatings Technology.

Career Highlights

Dr. Dickie graduated from the University of North Dakota with a B.S. Chemistry degree. After earning the Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry at the University of Wisconsin, he was a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Glasgow The University of Glasgow (Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh Ghlaschu, Latin: Universitas Glasguensis) was founded in 1451, in Glasgow, Scotland.  and at Stanford Research Institute Stanford Research Institute - Former name of SRI International.  (now SRI International). Dr. Dickie joined Ford Motor Company in 1968, and was corporate technical specialist when he retired from Ford in the beginning of 2000.

While at Ford, Dr. Dickie's research interests centered on automotive paints, polymer blends and composites, structural adhesives, and related areas of polymer science. Technical contributions included new approaches to a wide range of automotive coatings (corrosion-resistant primers, water-based topcoats, electron beam cure coatings) and fundamental investigations of coating adhesion and degradation mechanisms. He led research on the use of structural adhesive bonding for automotive applications including body construction.

Industry-Related Activities

Dr. Dickie is a member of the American Chemical Society The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a learned society (professional association) based in the United States that supports scientific inquiry in the field of chemistry. Founded in 1876 at New York University, the ACS currently has over 160,000 members at all degree-levels and in , the Adhesion Society, and the Society of Rheology. He served as chair of the ACS (Asynchronous Communications Server) See network access server.  Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE PMSE Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes

Currently on the editorial advisory board of Progress in Organic Coatings, Dr. Dickie also has served on the editorial boards the Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology and Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research.

Earlier this year, he was recognized by the Adhesion Society as a Robert L. Patrick Fellow and was honored by the ACS PMSE Division with its Distinguished Service Award. A member of the first class of Fellows of PMSE, he has served on the division's executive committee in various positions, and is currently Councilor coun·cil·or also coun·cil·lor
