Maharashtra Maharashtra (məhä`rəshtrə), state (2001 provisional pop. 96,752,247), 118,530 sq mi (306,993 sq km), W India, on the Arabian Sea. The city of Mumbai (formerly Bombay) is the capital. Hybrid Seeds Company Limited (Mahyco), Monsanto Company's seed partner in India, has received commercial approval for its insect-protected hybrid cotton seed from the Indian Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC). Under the GEAC approval cotton seed will be available in India for the 2002 growing season growing season, period during which plant growth takes place. In temperate climates the growing season is limited by seasonal changes in temperature and is defined as the period between the last killing frost of spring and the first killing frost of autumn, at which time annual plants die and biennials and perennials cease active growth and become dormant for the cold winter months., which is scheduled to begin in the second quarter. The insect-protected technology will be marketed under the Bollgard brand name.
