Zhukov (physics of materials, Basque Country U., San Sebastian) and Zhukova, who works for a San Sebastian company that makes microwires, detail one of the several types of small and low-dimension magnetic materials that are being developed to satisfy the need for them in advanced technology. The family of thin wire with diameters in the range of 1-30[micro]m has gained importance in the literature recently, they say, because they combine excellent soft magnetic properties with attractive magneto-transport properties and an unusual re-magnetification process in positive magnetostriction compositions that exhibit magnetically bistable behavior and quite fast domain wall propagation. They discuss fabrication methods, mechanical properties, amorphous microwires and their magnetic properties, microwires that are not magnetically soft, the effect of magnetic structure on the frequency dependence of coercivity, and applications such as magnetic and thermal sensors.
