MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) The machine recognition of numeric data printed with magnetically charged ink. It is used on bank checks and deposit slips. MICR readers detect the characters and convert them into digital data.  (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (business, printer) Magnetic Ink Character Recognition - (MICR) A character recognition system using special ink and characters which can be magnetised and read automatically. ) is used for the numbers and symbols typically seen at the bottom of checks and negotiable documents, which contain routing information and are processed automatically in the banking system by MICR readers.

The Xerox DocuPrint 1050 and 525 MX are the newest MICR-equipped Xerox models. They offer the choice of a dedicated MICR engine or a traditional engine that uses standard toner and allows MICR toner to be easily exchanged with a Customer Changeable Housing, a container that slides in and out of the printer. This flexibility allows print professionals to vary the jobs they produce, from MICR applications to direct-mail pieces, books and statements.

"Print providers want to leverage business opportunities and maximize their investment in digital technology by printing a wide range of transactional, on-demand, and publishing applications, including those requiring MICR," said Quincy Allen, president, Xerox Production Systems Group. "Typically, these applications are associated with specific market segments and equipment, but with this system, a variety of work is possible on a single digital continuous-feed device."

Duplex printing The ability to print on both sides of the paper.  is enabled on the DocuPrint 1050 MX, which pairs two DocuPrint 525 MX systems. The DocuPrint 525 MX system prints with 600 dpi resolution on one side of pin-fed paper at 244 feet per minute. With its 19.5" wide web, the system can print 12-up 3" x 6" checks at the rate of 2,928 per minute, the equivalent of 532 images per minute two-up for standard 8.5" x 11" pages. The systems support IPDS (Intelligent Printer Data Stream) The native format built into IBM laser printers, which accepts fonts and formatted raster images. One of its major functions is its communications protocol that negotiates printer transfers from servers in the network that  and LCDS data streams for MICR printing and all major mainframe and publishing data streams for non-MICR printing. The printers also integrate seamlessly with open workflow systems, including those of the Xerox FreeFlow(TM) Digital Workflow In print publishing, using the computer to lay out text and illustrations prior to creating film negatives for every page or going directly to plate. Prior to digital workflow, the typesetting and pre-press stages were far more time consuming and labor-intensive.  Collection.

The system includes an integrated Windows-based controller that manages all printer functions. Print providers can also opt for the Xerox FreeFlow DocuSP(R) print server to maintain a consistent operator interface and application portability with other Xerox devices -- continuous-feed or cut-sheet.

The Xerox DocuPrint 1050 and 525 MX Continuous Feed digital printers are immediately available in the U.S. through the Xerox direct sales force. They will be available in most other markets worldwide soon thereafter. The U.S. list price for the DocuPrint 525 MX starts at $410,000.
