In a dramatic departure from his futuristic tales of the extraterrestrial, Card has created a contemporary urban fantasy set in a comfortable Los Angeles African American African American Multiculture A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa. See Race.  community, featuring three young male protagonists and their friends, family and neighbors. While race relations and stereotyping are issues not dodged in this novel, the predominant theme is drawn from William Shakespeare: "We are such stuff as dreams are made on." Newborn Mack Street, found in a plastic shopping bag, grows up with a strange gift. He can dream the deepest desires of the people around him, though they come true in bitterly ironic ways.
