FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24th:
Magic Hat's Mardi Gras Weekend kicks off Friday eve at the Higher
Ground Music Club, featuring a New Orleans dance party with Antibalas
Afrobeat Orchestra. This thirteen-member orchestra overwhelms the
stage with monstrous horns and bass, polyrhythmic beats and funky
breaks, and furious lyrics in English, Yoruba and Spanish. Tickets are
$13 in advance and $15 day of show.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25th:
1PM: Dance to the Brazilian drumming of Sambatucada at 1:00 PM. Enjoy
retail therapy in the stores of downtown Burlington, or warm
yourselves in any of the myriad of downtown bars and restaurants.
3:00 PM: The Main Event manifests as an eye-popping parade consisting
of more than 35 floats festooned with all manner of ornamentation,
costumed citizenry and an unrestrained hurling of exotic beaded
baublery, New Orleans' moon pies, Lake Champlain Chocolates, and other
sweet surprises will rain upon the tens of thousands of eager
onlookers lining the avenue.
APRES PARADE: Mardi Gras After Hours takes over the Queen City for an
evening of never-ending musical gumbo and Cajun cuisine in the city's
many nightclubs and restaurants. Or check out G. Love & Special Sauce
at Higher Ground in South Burlington.
The Magic Hat Mardi Gras Celebration serves as a financially fat
fundraiser for the Women's Rape Crisis Center of Burlington, and is
underwritten by JetBlue Airways and Ben & Jerry's.
