Magazines from McGraw-Hill and new company on green design & construction.

McGraw Hill Construction (New York), the publisher of "Architectural Record," among other publications, will begin the production of "GreenSource," "the magazine of sustainable design," with an issue in May. It will be published three times in 2006 and bimonthly beginning in 2007.

Targeted to "the entire design and construction community," the new title has a controlled circulation of 42,000 owners, architects, builders and interior designers involved in sustainable design, including all 30,000 members of the United States Green Building Council (Washington, D.C.), an organization that works to promote buildings that are "environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy place, to live and work." It is also targeted to related professionals at companies who have products and services for the sector.

The magazine will carry the latest information on designing and constructing environmentally responsible commercial buildings with coverage of technological developments in green design and construction, industry trends, case studies, new products, recent developments in green design legislation, and new policies established by private owners. Editorial will include stories on such topics as: enforcement of the Clean Water Act; photovoltaic systems; robo buildings; developing green cities in China; and, using geothermal and other renewable energies.

Also, a new company, Ultimate Home Design, Inc. (Temecula, CA) has begun the publication of "Ultimate Home Design," a new magazine targeted to homeowners and building trade practitioners, with a May/June issue. It will be published six times a year and an annual subscription costs $20. On the trade side, circulation includes developers, architects, designers, engineers and contractors.

The new consumer/trade title is being published to serve as a design and build resource for "environmentally enhanced lifespan living," and is based on the acceptance of concepts which attempt to recognize, respect, value and accommodate the broadest possible spectrum of human abilities in the ergonomic design of products and environments that are easier to use, more aesthetically appealing and which integrate sustainable green building practices, minimizing the impact on the natural environment.

The premier issue has articles on: site planning, watershed planning and low-impact development, biophilic design, smart homes, sustainable design promoted by the American Institute of Architects, current challenges facing builders, and national initiatives to encourage green design and construction.
