Under the ATC agreement, MGE will spin off its transmission assets, valued at $35 million to $40 million. The company owns about 8% of the state's transmission system which is defined as 69 kilovolts and above.

As a result of joining the ATC, MGE's rates for electric transmission are expected to improve over the next five years, compared to other Wisconsin utilities. The company does not anticipate any impact on its earnings as a result of joining the ATC.

In May, MGE announced it was joining the Midwest Independent System Operator, an organization of Midwest utilities that oversees the regional transmission market. The ATC creates another layer of independence.

Other utilities in the ATC are Wisconsin Energy Corp., Alliant Energy Alliant Energy Corporation (NYSE: LNT) is a public utility holding company that incorporated in Madison, Wisconsin in 1981. MGE is a public utility that generates, transmits and distributes electricity to 125,000 customers in Dane County. The company also transports and distributes natural gas to 112,000 customers in seven south-central and western Wisconsin counties. MGE has served the Madison area since 1896.
