THE SAFEDISC technology was recently unveiled by Macrovision at the E3 Show in Atlanta.

"This program allows replication service providers to render a value-added service A value-added service (VAS) is a telecommunications industry term for non-core services or, in short, all services beyond standard voice calls and fax transmissions.  to their customers, differentiate themselves from their competition, and generate incremental revenue," said Peter Newman

"We are very pleased to be offering SAFEDISC as the antipiracy solution for the CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

manufacturing industry. With software publishers losing billions of dollars worldwide annually, the CD-ROM industry has been actively seeking a viable solution. SAFEDISC will create an opportunity for publishers to boost both volumes and overall revenues for their titles," said Brian Dunn, vice president, Macrovision Corporation.

Facilities seeking to offer the SAFEDISC technology can take advantage of two basic licensing options. The first option allows facilities who are servicing Macrovision's direct accounts to become SAFEDISC-authorized service providers. SAFEDISC-authorized facilities apply the technology using the Doug Carson & Associates' (DCA (1) (Document Content Architecture) IBM file formats for text documents. DCA/RFT (Revisable-Form Text) is the primary format and can be edited. DCA/FFT (Final-Form Text) has been formatted for a particular output device and cannot be changed. ) Mastering Interface System (MIS). The authorized facilities also report on usage, and in turn receive a service fee from Macrovision or C-Dilla.

The second option allows authorized facilities to become SAFEDISC-licensed service providers. Licensed service providers perform the same functions as authorized facilities, but also acquire the ability to encrypt publishers' content using a SAFEDISC encryption tool kit.
