Eva's father is a college professor who is so grief-stricken after the death of his wife, Eva's mother, that he is desperate to make changes in their own lives, much to Eva's horror. She wants to stay in Chicago with her friends to finish high school, but her father insists she accompany him to Poland to help in an underground movement among students he will teach. The plot concerns Eva's gradual understanding of what the Poles are fighting for, her acceptance that their struggle is worth supporting, and her eventual dedication to their cause. There is a young man involved, Tomek, and through coming to know him and his family, Eva sees for herself the sacrifices individuals have made for freedom. There is danger and suspense SUSPENSE. When a rent, profit a prendre, and the like, are, in consequence of the unity of possession of the rent, &c., of the land out of which they issue, not in esse for a time, they are said to be in suspense, tunc dormiunt, but they may be revived or awakened.
