MacDonald Dettwiler is developing CARDS in collaboration with Defence Research Establishment Ottawa (DREO DREO Defence Research Establishment Ottawa DREO Desired Rated Exhaust Oxygen ) of the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND DND Drag and Drop DND Department of National Defence (Canada & Australia) DND Do Not Disturb DND Dungeons and Dragons DND Den Norske Dataforening DND Direct Nanoparticle Deposition DND Drugs for Neglected Diseases ) to investigate electronic countermeasures techniques for countering coherent Pulse Doppler radars. This equipment will be used by military forces to protect ships and aircraft against detection from opposing radar systems and attack from missile weapons. In the high stakes game of wartime search and destroy, this equipment ensures survival for the equipment and crews of a nation's military forces. The Canadian Department of National Defence has several large programs, valued at over $300 million, for electronic warfare systems where CARDS could be a key component. The international marketplace is expected to be many times this size. This radar deception jammer has recently been tested in Canadian airborne flight trials at the United States Navy's radar targeting laboratory, and in Australia. CARDS' performance against representative modern radar weapons systems has been extremely successful in these test scenarios. These trials have led to initial operational test and evaluation (testing) Initial Operational Test and Evaluation - (IOT&E) The first phase of operational test and evaluation conducted on pre-protectional items, prototypes, or pilot production items and normally completed prior to the first major production decision. contracts with the Canadian Department of National Defence and the Royal Australian Air Force The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is the Air Force branch of the Australian Defence Force. MacDonald Dettwiler's Space and Defence Systems division is reaching the end of this phase of development for the CARDS radar jammer. The project history in this division has been predominantly Canadian, but the production of CARDS will move it into the international market, starting with the contract with the Australian government. "MacDonald Dettwiler views this product as a unique high technology offering that currently satisfies a need no other product can match", said Dave Caddey, Vice President, Space and Defence Systems.
