Ma Dear's Old Green House written by Denise Lewis Patrick and illustrated by Sonia Lynn Sadler, published by Just Us Books, Inc., was awarded the Children's Book of the Year honor by the African American Academy of Arts and Letters. Other winners include playwright August Wilson for Gem of the Ocean; comedian Wanda Sykes for her book, Yeah, I Said It, (Atria, September 2004) for humor; screenwriters Keir Pearson and Terry George for the Hotel Rwanda screenplay (Newmarket Press, February 2005); and Russell Simmons's Def Jam artists in the poetry category.
